The Lamborghini Countach is a legendary sports car that was produced by the Italian automaker Lamborghini from 1974 to 1990. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative designs in the history of the automotive industry, as it introduced the “Italian Wedge” shape that became synonymous with supercars.

The Birth of a Legend

The Countach was conceived as a successor to the Lamborghini Miura, which was a groundbreaking mid-engine sports car that debuted in 1966. The Miura was praised for its performance and beauty, but it also faced competition from rivals such as the Ferrari Daytona.

To create a new car that would surpass the Miura, Lamborghini’s chief engineer Paolo Stanzani and his team collaborated with designer Marcello Gandini of Bertone, who had also designed the Miura. The project was codenamed “LP112”, which stood for “Longitudinale Posteriore 12 cilindri” or “Longitudinal Rear 12 cylinders”.

The prototype of the Countach, called the LP500, was unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. The car stunned the audience with its futuristic and aggressive style, featuring a low and angular body, a rear-mounted V12 engine, and scissor doors. The name “Countach” was reportedly an exclamation of astonishment in the Piedmontese dialect, uttered by a Bertone employee when he saw the car for the first time.

The Evolution of a Masterpiece

The production version of the Countach, the LP400, was launched in 1974, after undergoing several modifications to improve its aerodynamics, cooling, and drivability. The car had a 3.9-liter V12 engine that produced 375 horsepower and could reach a top speed of 309 km/h. The car also had a tubular steel chassis, a five-speed manual transmission, and four-wheel disc brakes. Only 158 units of the LP400 were made, making it the rarest and most sought-after variant of the Countach.

The Countach underwent several revisions and improvements throughout its production run, resulting in different models such as the LP400S, the LP500S, the 5000QV, and the 25th Anniversary. The changes included increasing the engine displacement, adding spoilers and flares, improving the suspension and steering, and updating the interior and exterior styling. The Countach also spawned a few special editions, such as the Walter Wolf Edition, the Turbo S, and the Evoluzione.

The Countach was discontinued in 1990, after 16 years of production and 1,983 units sold. It was replaced by the Lamborghini Diablo, which was also designed by Gandini. The Countach remains one of the most iconic and recognizable cars ever made, and a symbol of Lamborghini’s legacy.

The Return of a Legend

In 2021, Lamborghini announced the Countach LPI 800-4, a limited-edition hybrid-electric sports car that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the original Countach. The car is based on the Lamborghini Sián, which is the company’s first hybrid model. The car features a 6.5-liter V12 engine and an electric motor that together produce 814 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The car also has a carbon fiber body, a four-wheel steering system, and a four-wheel drive system. The car’s design is inspired by the Countach, with elements such as the wedge shape, the scissor doors, the hexagonal motifs, and the heritage colors. Only 112 units of the Countach LPI 800-4 will be made, paying homage to the LP112 project.
